Barenboim calls for new approach

I found this on the (very interesting) blog of the American-Jerusalemite professor who calls himself 'The Magnes Zionist'. I agree with him that Barenboim's call for a just settlement - which appeared in the New York Review of Books - is important. Not so much because it comes from no less a person than Barenboim and is co signed by an impressive list of Nobel laureates and otherwise famous and interesting people. No, it is mainly interesting because Barenboim points at the one thing that has been painfully missing from all initiatives that since 1948 have been put forward: it should no be just another mechanism to achieve some sort of settlement, but it should be something that takes into account the injustice done in the past and ensure equal rights and dignity to both Israeli's and Palestinians.

For the last forty years, history has proven that the Israeli–Palestinian conflict cannot be settled by force. Every effort, every possible means and resource of imagination and reflection should now be brought into play to find a new way forward. A new initiative which allays fear and suffering, acknowledges the injustice done, and leads to the security of Israelis and Palestinians alike. An initiative which demands of all sides a common responsibility: to ensure equal rights and dignity to both peoples, and to ensure the right of each person to transcend the past and aspire to a future.
