Indiase filmmaker Mira Nair sluit zich aan bij boycot en blijft weg van filmfestival van Haifa

De Indiase filmmaker Mira Nair heeft een uitnodiging afgewezen om als speciale gast aanwezig te zijn op het filmfestival van Haifa, dat gehouden zal worden in september. Zij deed dat omdat ze de culturele boycot van Israel steunt. In een reeks 'tweets' meldde Nair: 

 I was just invited to Israel as a guest of honor at the Haifa International Film Festival with “The Reluctant Fundamentalist.” I will not be going to Israel at this time. I will go to Israel when the walls come down. I will go to Israel when occupation is gone. I will go to Israel when the state does not privilege one religion over another. I will go to Israel when Apartheid is over. I will go to Israel, soon. I stand with the [Palestinian Campaign] for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) and the larger Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) Movement.

Nair's eerste fiklm “Salaam Bombay!” (1988) won een Gouden Camera en de publieksprijs in Cannes. Ook kreg de film een nominatie in de VS voor een Academy Award. Haar film “Monsoon Wedding” won in 2001 de Gouden Leeuw op het filmfestival van Venetië. Andere films van Nair, die woont en werkt in de VS, waren “Mississippi Masala” (1991), “Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love” (1996) and “Vanity Fair” (2004).In Haifa zou haar laatste film “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” vertoond zijn die zijn première beleefde op het filmfestival van Venetië in 2012.
Nair plaatst sluit zich met haar weigering om te gaan aan bij artiesten en intellectuelen als de Pixies, Roger Waters, Elvis Costello, Alice Walker en Stephen Hawking die eerder  Israel meden uit protest over Israels politiek jegens de Palestijnen.
